The Chronicles Begin

I've decided on a project for this semester. It's going to be a tough one to keep up with. But I'm determined to follow through on something I've committed myself to. I tend to be very bad at self-motivation projects because I also tend to care more about letting others down than letting myself down. So, this is the plan. I am chronicling my last semester at Hillsdale College. The goal is to take pictures throughout the semester... every day. Yes, that's right, take pictures every day. I will then choose I a picture--one picture--that is the quintessential picture of the day. Quintessential meaning it defines the events of the day to the best of my ability. I'm hoping I'll get better at choosing what that one picture should be each day. Of course, I'll be taking more than one picture, but I will only post one. Oh yes, I forgot that part. Each day I will post the picture of the day. I'm hoping I can do this without a problem. As exams, etc. swing around, I'm sure it will become more difficult, in which case I may occasionally need to switch to posting over the weekend.

To start us off, I have a picture from yesterday evening. Some friends and I decided to take advantage of our current, class free schedules and do some adventuring in the snowy outdoors. After testing the new ice skating rink, breaking and fixing a snow shovel, getting a few bruises and sprains while sliding over and over again down ice-covered side walks, we decided to head to the Arboretum. After hopping over the fence, we headed to the pond, hoping to find it frozen. A few of the boys gingerly stepped onto the pond. Sure enough, the ice was thick. After being assured by their jumps and no breakage, I cautiously followed behind, sticking close to the edge. We all enjoyed the feeling of being atop frozen water. Soon we gathered together, deciding to take a picture with the iced-over pond. Upon brushing the snow away, we found a few cracks under the dusting. No water bubbled through, so we continued with snapping a picture-the very picture I'm posting today. After a short time, we decided it was time to return to the Paul House for hot chocolate. As we headed off the pond, we all heard a crack. For a split second we paused in shock, then bolted to the bank. No one was lost. No one was wet. The ice was not crushed. Before long, we were sitting around a table sipping cups of hot chocolate and laughing about our potentially disastrous scare.

Here's to the beginning of the end. And it will go down with lots of stories, pictures and friends.
